The World Athletics Championships will be held in Eugene, the USA from 15 to 24. July. Yle shows the races on its channels.

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas was scheduled to compete at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene in two different jumping events: his main event, the triple jump, and the long jump.

Rojas broke the long jump World Cup limit on June 8 in Spain with a result of 693. The long jump women's World Cup limit is 682. The performance was later rejected, as Rojas jumped the result with triple jump shoes. This is reported by, among others, NBC Sport(you switch to another service).

The bottom of triple jump shoes is thicker than long jump shoes. The permitted thickness of a long jump shoe is 20 millimeters and a triple jump shoe is 25 millimeters.

A thicker base is more stable in performance and enables better results.

Mika Muukka, competition manager of the Finnish Sports Confederation (SUL), believes that the rules are certainly known to top athletes.

The shoes of general athletes really spoke volumes last summer at the Tokyo Olympics, when tough results were achieved and records were broken. For example, Norway's Karsten Warholm improved his 400-meter hurdles world record in Tokyo by 76 hundredths with a result of 45.94.

- It is not intended that this would go like in the formulas, that similar shoes are developed for certain athletes, so that time would improve. The competition should be fair so that it doesn't become too much of a tool sport.

At the moment, apart from the triple jump, shoes thicker than 20 millimeters can only be used for running distances longer than 800 meters.

However, in November 2024, new rules will bring a change to athletics, when 20 millimeters will be set as the maximum thickness of shoes for all sports.

The rule is supposed to be implemented after the Paris Summer Olympics and the 2024 Diamond League season.

Yulimar Rojas jumped a new triple jump world record of 15.74 in March 2022. The women's triple jump competition at the World Championships starts with qualifying on Saturday, July 16 at 20:30 Finnish time. Suomen 's Kristiina Mäkelä and Senni Salminen are participating .
