Hotel review written on Tripadvisor website has run into trouble in Thailand – US man faces up to two years in prison.
Thailand’s harsh defamation laws can take a tour into bad trouble.
An American man who wrote a text criticizing hotel staff on the Tripadvisor website has run into Thailand’s trouble.
Police arrested the man after he was reported by the owner of the hotel under review. The man has been released on bail to await the progress of the investigation.
According to the AFP news agency, the jupaka originated when a man working in Thailand vacationed at Sea View Resort on Koh Chang Island.
He was not happy with the service he received, and in July, he posted a critical review of the hotel on Tripadvisor. On that site, anyone can post their reviews of, for example, the hotel they are using for other people to see.
In his assessment, the man described the staff as unfriendly and said they seemed like they didn’t want customers. The hotel owner felt that the man had damaged the reputation of the hotel, and he contacted the police.
According to the owner, the American man had also quarreled with the staff about the alcohol price.
In Thailand, penalties for defamation are severe, so a U.S. man can now, at worst, face up to two years in prison. Also, he may have to pay more than 5,000 euros.
