Facebook wants to clean up Holocaust-denying posts from its service

Jewish organizations have campaigned to clean up Facebook of Holocaust denial.

The social media company Facebook bans posts and groups that deny that the Jewish genocide took place or distort its history.

Facebook says it will direct Holocaust seekers to expert sources and the right information.

The updated strategy was revealed by Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday. The company says the implementation of the new policy will take time when the company’s employees and systems need to be taught to identify prohibited postings.

This is the latest attempt to take action against conspiracy theories and misinformation spreading in the service. This month, Facebook announced it would shut down groups and sites that support the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Zuckerberg wrote that I struggled with the nuisance caused by the defense of freedom of speech and Holocaust denial and trivialization.

  • My thinking – as well as the policy on hate speech – has evolved, as I have seen data that shows an increase in anti-Semitic violence.

Jewish organizations have campaigned to clean up Facebook of Holocaust denial.

Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, an organization that compensates Nazi victims, published daily videos in which Holocaust survivors urged Zuckerberg to shut down Holocaust-denying groups on Facebook.

In 2018, Zuckerberg raised outrage among Jewish organizations when he said Holocaust deniers are not intentionally wrong. Freedom of speech applies even too offensive publications if they do not explicitly incite violence.

Zuckerberg, who is himself a Jew, then clarified that he still considered the Holocaust denial to be deeply offensive personally. He said that he thinks positive speech is the only way to combat poor offensive speech.
