The election was decided by the city's Board of Education in a closed ballot by 6 to 5 votes. The second candidate in the vote was Juha Vuorinen, who was the director at the Rovaniemi and Kokkola city theaters.
Lucina Hänninen, Director of Education, had made a winning proposal to elect Mikkelsson. He describes Mikkelsson as a new leader who is knowledgeable, committed, and local.
The theater staff had also expressed their support for Mikkelsson's choice in advance.
The term of office will begin in early October. The agreement is for five years and also includes a two-year option.
At its meeting on Tuesday, the Kajaani Education Board also decided to elect Mika Tiihonen as Director of Early Childhood Education and Joni Rahja as Director of the Library.
