The man served in the Marines for 20 years and resigned last November. He decided to take part in the defense of Ukraine as a volunteer.

The image of two other Americans known to have fought on the Ukrainian side has also begun to circulate in the Russian media. Russian forces are said to have captured them north of Kharkiv.
In an image released by CNN, the men are looking up at the camera and their hands are apparently tied behind their backs.
CNN has not been able to confirm when the picture was taken. According to the other man's mother, the U.S. State Department has said it is investigating the authenticity of the image.

According to CNN, the U.S. State Department said Thursday that it is also aware of a third-country national who has disappeared while fighting in Ukraine as a volunteer against Russian forces. On Wednesday, two U.S. citizens missing in the Kharkiv region are reported to have been captured by Russians.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Ned Price said no further details could be provided so far. According to Price, the ministry is in contact with the families of the two who were reported missing on Wednesday, the Ukrainian authorities, and the international Red Cross.
However, their possible incarceration has not yet been confirmed. According to Price, the United States has not yet discussed the U.S. states that have been reported missing with Russia, and there have been no indications from Russia that they have been held captive by Russian troops.
